Our Purpose - Our Goals
|
My wife and I at a Cocker Rescue Shelter adopting two new members of our family. |
Forming The Joe Cocker Foundation has been on our list of things to do for a very long time. Finding time to do those many important things you want to do in your life can be, as you know, very difficult. In February of 2008, my wife and I were very fortunate to be able to form this long planned charitable trust. Subsequently we obtained 501(c)3 status as a tax exempt charity. |
We feel badly for people who are unable or unwilling to take the time to connect with animals. A family pet adds a richness to life that cannot be purchased or replaced. The
“Joe Cockers” of the world teach us and our children about unconditional love, fairness, bravery, commitment and responsibility. They trust us to treat them fairly. They are dependent upon us for all of their needs. And yet they are often ignored or treated with unthinkable cruelty.
The purpose of The Joe Cocker Foundation extends well beyond informing the public about pet identification strategies and helping to cover the costs of microchipping. We
are here to help promote a broad base of ideas that establish the humane care and treatment of animals as a way of life. Microchipping is simply one loving gesture.
For those of us who love animals, considering their needs comes naturally. However,
the humane care and treatment of animals does not come naturally for some people.
Our goal is to inform these people that the adoption of policies based in humane care is simply a matter of common sense.
For better or for worse, the primary and motivating argument where an appeal to common sense is concerned is money and the waste of it when humane animal management policies are not adopted.
The things that seldom accompany complaints about higher prices and higher taxes are suggestions and solutions that effectively reduce prices and lower taxes. The same old approach to the same old problems imposes high costs on a community when alternative approaches to addressing the problem would not only minimize costs but prove more effective in resolving the problem.
One common problem experienced to some degree by every community is the problem of stray dogs, cats and other domestic animals. The costs associated with the capture, transport, shelter, veterinary care and identification of the owner (if possible) are considerable and, in many case can be avoided.
Many people and communities are not aware that policies and programs grounded in humane care actually save taxpayers across the country millions of dollars annually.
Other benefits of adopting humane animal management policies include:
1. creating a safer community providing a higher quality of life for its residents;
2. creating a reputation as a community that addresses problems in a creative, thoughtful and effective cost efficient manner;
3. creating a community that has a special attraction for others who are looking for a higher quality of life;
4. creating a perception of your community that tells others that you can be trusted to address their best interests and priorities in an effective manner;
In summary, where all else fails, we appeal to the desire to have a safe community that offers a higher quality of life for its residents at no cost and great savings.
